 Tell us about Queer Theatre.

Queer Theatre is a theatre and production company proudly dedicated to telling
LGBTQ+ stories and unashamedly committed to nurturing queer talent.

What inspired you to set it up?

Queer Theatre was born from my personal struggles and a deep need for change. A
year ago, I found myself in a dire situation: waking up filled with drugs, covered in
burns, cuts, and bruises, and on the brink of a heart attack after being sexually
assaulted. It wasn’t the first time I had faced such danger—my relationship with sex,
drugs, and alcohol had spiralled out of control. In desperation, I did the bravest thing
I’ve ever done: I asked for help.

Through countless support groups and recovery programmes, I began dismantling
my ego, confronting harmful behaviours, and facing years of unresolved trauma,
abuse, and addiction. In this process, I realised that what brings me true happiness
is helping other queer people explore our shared truths, identities, and issues
through the performing arts. As an HIV+ gay man who grew up under Section 28,
I’ve battled homophobia, addiction, and shame, witnessing the evolution of our
community over four decades. Who knew this rocky path was really a path to help
lead me to create Queer Theatre aware of some of the profound challenges which
our community faces.

 What makes Queer Theatre different?

We’re not just ‘another theatre company’. At Queer Theatre, we’re committed to
creating opportunities for queer artists to develop their craft. Our profits from these
events are used to fund projects and productions that uplift the community.
So many LGBTQ+ people feel profoundly lonely, often connecting with their
community and the performing arts world only through social media and apps. Queer
Theatre aims to change that by fostering a genuine community where queer people
can explore their artistry without fear or judgement. We tackle the issues facing our
community head-on, with authenticity, kindness, and a dedication to uplifting one
another. It’s about more than just performing—it’s about creating a space where
queer artists can truly thrive, grow, and perhaps - heal.

What are your plans for Queer Theatre?

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of 2B: Weekly Acting Classes for LGBTQ+
People at iconic LGBTQ_ venue - The Two Brewers in Clapham every Monday from
7pm to 9pm. These classes are open to performers of all experience levels, offering
a safe and supportive space to explore their craft and make new friends and creative
connections.
Additionally, we’re planning a quarterly networking event called Luvvie for queer
creatives, in collaboration with our friends at The Groucho Club in Soho. It’s named
after the term coined by our newly appointed patron, Stephen Fry, who joins our
other patrons, actor Annette Badland and playwright Martin Sherman.

We’re also excited to bring back The Show People Podcast, now as a monthly live
event at the queer-owned and soon-to-be-refurbished Nell of Old Drury, opposite
Drury Lane.
Beyond that, we have plans for queer artist showcases, scratch and comedy nights,
and a queer playwriting festival next year. And that’s just the beginning!
